Giving Tuesday | Héctor & Luisa’s Story

Héctor and Luisa might just be the power couple of the Oasis Spanish Senior’s group. Since joining, they’ve become a mainstay in the classes and conversations. They’re even serving as class mentors — yes, both of them — sharing their passion for learning and vibrant energy with the rest of the group! There is no slowing them down.

It all started with a Zoom session in January 2022. “We started by attending an incredible presentation on neuroplasticity and aging. It was a really meaningful discussion for us. It made a big impact.” Discovering the group during the pandemic meant forming crucial social connections during a time when many seniors were feeling isolated and alone.

Since that time, Héctor and Luisa have been regulars at the Oasis Spanish Senior’s events. As pandemic restrictions loosened, they’ve been able to attend meetings with people in person as well as online. That sense of community has been a way for them to share their experience and connect to others in the community, all while learning new things and staying sharp along the way.

When it comes to highlighting a specific moment or event they’ve attended, Héctor and Luisa can’t highlight just one. “Every Oasis virtual and in-person session teaches us something new new. We hate missing a class because we feel like we could miss out on learning a new idea, or a chance to have a good conversation with other people in the class.”

“It’s like our own family. It’s a place where we can learn, teach, have fun, and keep stress at bay. No matter how far we are from our homeland, at Oasis, we always feel like we’re at home.”
